Apple TV and Paramount+ collaboration a game changer?

Earlier in 2023, our friends at ContentBay.com analysed the respective libraries of the top US Streaming services, declaring Netflix the ‘King of the castle’ with Paramount and Prime coming a joint is distant second.

With the news of potential co-operation between Apple and Paramount+ they ran the numbers to see if this new alliance would shift the dial.

Headlines, it did! When the combined libraries were judged against the criteria of Scores, Volume, Original Language Variations and Age ratings profile, the potential partnership, while still not threatening the ‘King’ to a significant step up the ladder of succession.

Disney Plus Plan Costs across our six key territories in USD equivalent Values (Dec 2023)

Relatively Speaking the USA is the most expensive place to take a premium Plan $13.99 with Eurozone territories offering the ‘best’ value at $13.18. This small difference across the Atlantic increases significantly however once you consider that the Non-US offering has many other Disney services such as Star and National Geographic bundled in.

The USA is again comes out ‘top’ on the Ad Tier plan costing almost 30% more ($7.99) than the cheapest, UK ($6.24) . This further compounded by our analysis reporting almost double (x1.97) the ad load on the US service versus the other five territories.

Our Ad Tier analysis showed Beckham was the dominant deliverer (Avoids football pun!) of Ad Impressions across our Six Territories

Across the period 23rd September - 5th November we estimate the stroll down Spice Girls lane delivered just over four times more impressions than it’s nearest rival, the Stephen Graham Thriller Bodies

A surprise winner in our viewing model was 2013’s ‘Last Vegas’ which due to the nuances of the Netflix Ad Strategy delivered in our estimation more than 20 times the Ad Impressions than the Emily Blunt Opioid romp(?) ’Pain Hustlers’.

Netflix Plan Costs USD across our six key territories in USD equivalent Values (Nov 2023)

Relatively Speaking the USA is the most expensive place to take a premium Plan $22.99 with Germany Spain & Italy offering the ‘best’ value at $19.77.

When looking specifically at the Basic Plan The USA again comes out on top $15.49 but this time the UK props up the table with a Basic Package costing just $13.74

The Ad tier plan continues the trend of top spot for the USA at $6.99 but here Germany offers the ‘Cheapest option’ with a bargain(?) $5.49 price tag.

Global Top Ten Rankings (Watched Hours & Weeks in Top 10, Nov 2023)

Although Netflix produces an all time ‘Global Top 10’ its limited to watched hours in the first 90 Days by series. Here we take a slightly different view looking at the all time Top 10 franchises based on Viewing Hours published by Netflix.

English TV Shows

Stranger Things (4 Series) is the winner by some distance with its 50 weeks in the 'Global Top 10’ but look at Wednesday with it’s single series so far suggesting this will likely inherit the Stranger things Crown.

Dahmer also needs a mention as it’s limited series generated almost 1bn viewing hours for only 7 weeks in the Global Top 10 with an average position across those 7 weeks of just above 3.

Non-English TV Shows

Look no further than this chart to get a sense of how important Squid Game was to Netflix, again its one series amassed almost 2.3bn viewing hours in its 20 weeks in the Global Top 10.

Contrast this with Money Heist which it is no surprise to see second on the list but with five series on the back and 32 weeks in the Global Top 10 has barely managed half the viewing hours of the South Korean game of death!
